The doors of perception:
Why Americans will believe almost anything

Recommended article by Tim O'Shea

Followup on the spinach contamination with bacteria and the media coverage that erroneously started out with blaming organic farmers and organic processing and marketing companies for this. (See Blog Sep 23, 24, 26)

Tim O'Shea has an outstanding article explaining methods of media propaganda that shape our beliefs about medical (and other) issues. He explains how politicians who wish to take advantage of the electorate deceive,  dissimulate (e.g. pretend to be helping rather than taking advantage of the public), and distract - to prevent scrutiny of their self-serving actions. From the other side, he points out how we have bought into medical myths that serve the pharmaceutical industry rather than the public (e.g. looking to pain medications as first treatments for headaches).

This is very highly recommended reading.
